Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Prairie View A & M University launching a Capital Campaign?

Prairie View A & M University has embarked upon one of the most significant endeavors in its 130 year history – a capital campaign to raise $30 million in philanthropic gifts.  Funds raised in the capital campaign will enable Prairie View A & M University to tap up to $12 million in matching money from the Texas Commitment. Additional money raised in the campaign will give the university an opportunity to build upon its strong academic foundation and bring continued growth to the institution.

What determined the need?

Based on the immediate need to secure funds from the Texas Commitment to Prairie View A & M University, the Board of Regents authorized a capital campaign to match and, therefore, release these dollars.   Also, an assessment conducted by the fund raising consulting firm Ketchum, Inc. determined that there exists philanthropic and alumni support for a $30 million capital fund raising campaign to support other initiatives needed for university enhancements.

What are the long-term benefits of this endeavor?

Throughout our history, Prairie View A & M University has supported the higher education aspirations of students and believes it has an obligation to give all a chance to reach for college study.  The capital campaign will allow the university to endow scholarships; endow chairs; increase the university endowment; make renovations and preserve facilities; invest in laboratories, equipment and technology; support athletic program; and enhance student support services.

Why does the university need an Endowment?

An endowment will help solidify Prairie View A & M University’s operational base with critical investment income.  We must continually seek to expand the university’s principal to provide a solid base.

As a state supported institution, why can’t these needs be funded through other sources?

Prairie View A & M University has existed as a state-assisted institution and proud member of the Texas A & M University System.  This network of support has made possible the achievements to date.  However, additional philanthropic investment is needed to reverse the chronic under-capitalization of the university’s academic programs, facilities, and financial capabilities.

Who are the campaign leaders?

The campaign has strong representation from Prairie View A & M University alumni, faculty, and community leaders. The Campaign Cabinet consists of: Mr. Don Clark, Mrs. Opal G. Johnson-Smith, Mrs. Nathelyne A. Kennedy, Mr. Roy G. Perry, Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Marvin Brailsford, Dr. Evelyn Thornton, Mr. Neal Baines, Ms. Thelma Pierre, Mr. Ernest Collins, Mr. Michael J. Sowell, Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Julius W. Becton, Dr. Hortense Kilpatrick, Mr. Louis Bedford, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Heath, Dr, Harold Bonner, Mrs. Pauline Bonner, Mr. James Mitchell, Dr. Willie Trotty, Ms. Monica Williams, and Mrs. Patricia Lonsbary.  Capital campaign counsel comes from Ketchum, Inc. who is charged with organization and management of campaign plan and timeline.

How long will the campaign last?

Building the infrastructure for the capital campaign began in January 2003.  We have identified campaign volunteers and an ongoing process of identifying and researching prospective donors in order to begin solicitations in September 2003. These solicitations of pledges from foundations, corporations, university faculty and staff, alumni, and other friends of Prairie View will culminate by April 2007.  Commitments of multi-year pledges can span up to five years.

How will alumni be a part of the campaign?

The alumni are Prairie View. They represent the University’s success. The capital campaign is an opportunity for alumni to again be a part of the Prairie View A&M University experience.  Alumni will be invited to volunteer in capital campaign leadership roles. They will be asked to reconnect with college friends at special gatherings to learn about how they can support the university. And, alumni will be asked to make a financial contribution to capital campaign supporting Prairie View A&M University - the school where they earned an education and built the foundation for their career path.

Who will be asked to contribute to the Prairie View A & M University Capital Campaign?

Significant support will be needed to fund these many projects.  Starting with the capital campaign leadership, faculty and staff, alumni and friends of the university, the capital campaign will invite all to make thoughtful and proportionate gifts.  Corporations, foundations, small businesses and the Greater Houston community will be asked to support the capital campaign as well.  Generous support from these resources will make it possible to receive matching funding for some key initiatives and fund other university priorities.

How can I make a gift?

We suggest that donors consider making multi-year pledges to the campaign.  This may enable them to consider larger investments, which can be funded over a period of time while giving Prairie View A & M University the assurance of support for various aspects of the project.  Pledges can be funded in a variety of ways.  Details are provided in the “Ways of Giving” section.

Are gifts tax deductible?

Might Prairie View be eligible for a matching gift from my employer?

Most large national companies support a matching gifts program that enables employees to double or triple their gift to institutions of higher education.  Your gift can be matched by an equal or larger gift from your company.  This is a win-win situation for you, your employer, and Prairie View A & M University.  To determine if your gift is eligible for a corporate matching gift, contact your human resources office.

Is payroll deduction available?

If you are an employee of Prairie View A & M University, a gift of $5 or more per pay qualifies you for payroll deduction.  A gift of $5 or $50 or more deducted from your pay check can enable you to make a much more generous gift than you might have thought possible.  Persons employed outside the university system should consult with their corporate human resources office to inquire about payroll deduction options.

Are opportunities for named or memorial gifts?

Yes, many naming opportunities are available as part of the Capital Campaign.  These types of gifts are a generous way to commemorate a special person or give recognition to a family, corporation, or group.  Donors may make gifts in memory of a deceased person or in honor of someone living or may establish a named gift opportunity for themselves. Named giving opportunities for new and current campus buildings are subject to the policies of the University System of the A&M Board of Regents.
